GPS Unit Basics

When looking for a GPS Unit to buy, you should look for several important GPS features. Here's what the experts say to consider when buying a GPS unit:

  • Look for a 12-channel device - 12-channel GPS devices are now fairly standard – these GPS devices can lock onto more than one satellite at a time. When you are in areas where reception is problematic (under trees, in the mountains, etc.), 12-channel GPS devices are usually more accurate.
  • Weight – Non-mapping GPS devices generally weigh less than mapping GPS devices. Most handhelds weigh about 7 ounces, but can weight more or less. This is an important consideration if you want to carry the GPS device in your pocket. If you plan to use the GPS device in your car or boat, this is not as important.
  • Waterproof – If you plan to use your GPS device outdoors, you MUST get a waterproof model. An IPX7 rating means that a model is waterproof to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Since salt water can ruin an ordinary GPS device, you should look for a marine-rated GPS device if you’ll be using it on a boat in a marine environment.
  • Battery Life – Battery life is almost always 2/3 shorter than the manufacturer’s advertised life. You might want to consider purchasing a set of rechargeable batteries and using your GPS unit in “conserve mode” whenever possible.
  • Expandable – if you think your interests or needs might change in the future, you should invest in an expandable GPS model. Certain cheaper models (Garmin 12) have no options for map downloads from software. More expensive models (eMap) are expandable. In addition to Metro Guide software, at least four other titles are available.

All of these GPS unit features are important to consider when evaluating various GPS units. If you have any questions, please contact us.
